Online SHaR Shiksha Program Post Covid -19

SHaR Shiksha Street Children Program

As early as April 2020 nations announced closure of schools, colleges and educational institutions, affecting education of around 1.5 billion children. Anganwadis, schools, universities and other educational institutions have been closed in India since March 24th, it is difficult to know when they will reopen. Schooling of many is going to be disrupted and many, many are going to drop out of schools, girls’ dropout rate is going to be much higher. Like any other crisis the COVID-19 crisis is affecting girls adversely, with shrinking resources girls have less to eat, have more household work and less time to study.

Online education has emerged as a solution during this crisis, schools are now teaching lessons or posting presentation and notes online. Whereas middle class children can use this opportunity children, especially girls from poorer sections cannot do so. Few families from the lower strata have computers or android phones, and even if they do have boys get the first preference. It is essential that girls in upper-primary and secondary grades  that have access to ICT facilities and continue their learning.

The present intervention in Vadodara (Gujarat), Kolhapur and Pune (Maharashtra) proposes to develop an ICT Education Centre for girls and make ICT facilities available to girls in safe and hygienic conditions. Around 10 computers and 2 printers will be housed in a spacious room with Internet facilities. Girls in the age group 10 to 18 will be able to access online lessons their schools transact at this centre. To maximize the use and reach larger number of girls the centre will run in batches of two hour each. The centre will run from 9 am to 7 pm. A facilitator teacher will teach the girls basic computer skills ( Word, Excel, Power Point) and help them with their school subjects. The centre will adhere to the post COVID-19 norms of social distancing and have in place protocol for safety and hygiene, the centre will also house a small library for girls.

Benefit Shiksha SHaR Program -Post Covid -19

The relationship between technology and inequality is multifaceted. Technology has enhanced productivity, accelerated economic growth, enabled knowledge and information sharing and increased access to basic services. However, it has also been the cause of inequalities. Mobile phones empower women it enables them to stay in touch with their friends and family, it saves time, women feel safer. For women who interact at market level, it opens up new opportunities for employment or access to financial services. The full potential of usage of technology has not been explored by the poor or the people who live in slums, mainly because they do not understand or know how to use technology for improving their life opportunities or use it to enhance their skills.

Post COVID-19, the world is will be driven by technology moving from touch to tech. Segments of population that do not know how to use technology to support their business activities will be left out from the ambit of growth and opportunities. The short-term impact in 2020-21 is job losses and subsequent dependency on state support. The COVID-19 crisis has also severely impacted bottom of the pyramid population in two Gujarat and Maharashtra. And with the numbers rising not only health, but livelihoods are threatened.

We at SHaR hope to work with the bottom of the pyramid population including migrants, who are suffering from evident losses of income and are dependent on government support. Under restrictive conditions – access and usage of technology becomes critical for people especially women, to be able to access the government benefits including cash transfer or loans from Microfinance Institutions or Banks. Even while the government has sanctioned budgets, the benefits are not always reaching the targeted population essentially because most people do not have or have fragmented information about the government benefit program.

Hence, SHaR will strive to be an interlocutor to help the BOP population including migrants who have lost their jobs to understand and know how to access the govt benefits. Also, for small businesses, like MSME and SMEs as a step towards reviving the economies which are facing critical constraints due to lock down or lack of labour, SHaR will try and help them get connected to banks and government agencies to help them get information they need to kick start their business activities while keeping in health.

SHaR Samuday Plus Program

All program design shall have specific objectives and goals to accomplish however, the program design shall be versatile and flexible to optimize use of resources and have enhanced reach and impact. Each of SHaR’s programme are stand alone programs but they also can be combined into one large program. For instance SHaR Online and Benefits SHaR can be combined as one program, the ICT Centre in this approach evolves as a ‘Community ICT Centre /SHaR Samuday Shiksha . This centre functions as an information centre for the community as also caters to the education need of girls. In some sense we see SHaR Samuday Shiksha as having modules/chapters that cater to the education and capacity building needs of the community, children, youth and adults.
